Rising heat is a health emergency that impacts some of our most vulnerable community members. Across Melbourne, people are second guessing whether they can afford to turn on the air con, worrying about older relatives in the heat, and struggling with sleepless nights.

Sweltering Cities works directly with communities in our hottest suburbs to campaign and advocate for more liveable, equitable and sustainable cities. We’ve been working with people in Greater Melbourne since 2021 and now have a network of hundreds of people who are passionate about advocacy campaigns for heatwave, safe rentals, sustainable planning regulations for cooler suburbs, and climate justice.

Working at the intersection of health, economic injustice and climate change, we aim to:

• Put the voices of people most affected by extreme heat front and centre in media coverage.
• Build powerful networks of diverse people and organisations.
• Win community campaigns with tangible local benefits.

Our vision is for people who live in hot suburbs and homes to have the availability to stay safe in heatwaves, and for our cities to be transformed to reduce carbon emissions and be safe in our future climate. We want to make sure that the benefits of creating healthy cities are shared with everyone, and nobody is left behind in deadly hot homes, baking suburbs or dangerous workplaces.
